Sousse is situated in an area where once stood the colony of Hadrumetum, as called
by Phoenicians, which thrived some 3000 years ago. It is a modern city and a popular
holiday resort for Europeans in particular. Sousse is a city that has a lot of attractions combining entertainment and discovery. It is one of the most vibrant seaside resorts
in Tunisia. It is also known as the « pearl of the coast » (in reference to the central part of the eastern coast of Tunisia) and is very well appreciated for its beautiful beaches.
It is an Arab-Islamic city that has existed since the 7th century AD and is home to many wonderful tourist sites, such as the Great Mosque, which dates to the 9th century, and the « Old Town », which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
During prehistoric times, Sousse, then called Hadrumetum, was a thriving city.
Afterward, its role diminished until it became the naval base of the country under the Aghlabids. Today, the « Old Town » includes several monuments that recall the glory of the ancient town: Rabat, a fortress and a religious place, the Great Mosque, which also looks like a fortress, and the Kasbah, which stands at the highest point in the city. Being the third largest city in Tunisia, Sousse has a lively downtown area with many shops and activities, along with a wonderful promenade along the sea.

forests that characterize the region since ancient times.
